2008 Ford Escape Hybrid FWD

The Escape is Ford’s compact 4-door SUV that joined the Ford lineup for 2001. The Escape Hybrid was added for 2005 and while it appears nearly identical to a standard Escape, it is powered by an Atkinson-Cycle 2.3-liter 4-cylinder engine combined with a 70-kilowatt electric motor. The estimated combined power output for the electric motor and gasoline engine is 155 horsepower. For 2008 the Escape receives a total makeover inside and out featuring a more rugged design to bear a stronger family resemblance to the Ford Explorer and Ford Expedition. The software control system has been improved for a better transition between gasoline and electric operation.

The 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid receives a makeover inside and out featuring a bolder, rugged design, higher beltline, raised hood and a new front fascia with headlights that sweep up toward the front corners of the vehicle to short side marker lights. The interior features seating surfaces comprised of 100 percent post-industrial materials, a revised dashboard with “a top of dash” display, Electric Power Assisted Steering system, and Ice Blue interior lighting. Also, the improved center console is large enough to hold a laptop computer and it can also be removed and hung from the front passenger side and rear of the console for additional storage. A number of updates have been made to reduce noise, vibration and harshness levels inside the SUV including changes to the roof panel for a better airflow, a new acoustic laminate sandwiched between two glass panels in the windshield and new carpeting.

Very satisfied with Ford Escape Hybrid

I bought this to replace a Lincoln Navigator. I had some concerns that the 4 cylinder engine would not be powerful enough for long highway trips, steep grades, etc. but these proved unfounded. The engine is a bit noisy if you need to step on it to accelerate rapidly but one gets used to this. If I drive carefully and try to economize fuel, I can easily get 31 mpg or even more. If I drive without any particular effort to conserve fuel, I still get over 29 mpg, even with a lot of high-speed freeway driving. I'm a climber and I like the fact that the rear seat folds flat to create an area that I can sleep in (diagonally) even though I am 6' 5" tall. The vehicle is less well sound insulated that my old Navigator, which translates to poorer stereo listening conditions, but the Navigator was a real fuel hog, getting about half the mpg or even less.
