Also, I'd like to comment on another owner's letter - yes, it makes noise even when shut down because its computer is shutting down everything (I was told as I too asked about it).
We bought a Jetta TDI Clean Diesel Comfortline Model - needed the leather seats due to owning dogs.
We test drove 3 TDI diesels as well as 9 other branded gas cars before deciding to go with the diesel - our daily commute is 91 kms return. Each of the 3 we test drove were quiet, peppy and great little cars. We went ahead and bought a new one, arrived to us with 31kms on the odometer. The first weekend we had the car, we noticed many things about the way it drove. It was overly noise when initially accelerating and when slowing to a stop, the shifting was very jerky - which has gotten much worse since. The car also whistles constantly and when you shut it down, it continues to whistle for about 1 minute or more some times (coming from under the the drivers seat area). There are also clicks and bangs that go along with the whistling. The Sunroof seal failed right from the first day we had it, so we had the complete assembly replaced already. We've also had the car in to the dealer 4 times to check the jerky shifting, last time they performed a complete factory reset (5800kms). That lasted for the trip home and the next day it was back to very jerky downshifting.
The car is also uncontrollable upon accelerating from a stop. Sometimes it accelerates nice and smooth, other times it jerks ahead like a rocket. If the car is coasting forward the least bit, and the accelerator is pushed, the car takes a good 2 to 3 seconds to respond, which is getting to be very scary and dangerous in Toronto traffic.
We've about had enough of this piece of crap. The salesman said we'd never go back to another car brand once we experienced a VW. Oh contraire - we will never by VW again.

Popular Mechanics: 2009 Jetta TDI Test Drive
"We recently test drove the Jetta through the streets of San Francisco and were pleasantly surprised. The Jetta has always been agile and zippy, but the new, more powerful TDi gives it more oomph, allowing us to power through traffic and accelerate from stoplights with authority and a little bravado—we totally tooled on a Toyota Prius. We were also shocked as to how quiet the engine operates: You have to consciously listen for the knocking, or you wouldn’t even notice it."
Green Fuels Forecast: '09 Jetta TDI Starting Under $22,000
Volkswagen announces the 2009 Jetta TDI will be priced from $21,990 for the four-door sedan, while the SportWagen TDI will start at $23,590. The 2009 Jetta TDI will be the first new diesel passenger car to meet the Tier 2 Bin 5 (T2B5) emissions standard. Volkswagen spokesman Keith Price tells Diesel Forecast that the TDI will be roughly equivalent to the mid-level SE trim on the gasoline engine Jetta. The 2009 Jetta SE with a 2.5L five cylinder starts at $19,990.
