Stealthy startup Solyndra has big plans

Solyndra Inc. may finally be ready for its day in the sun.

The Fremont-based solar company has been operating in stealth mode, despite having prominent headquarters and a manufacturing site visible from Interstate 880. But now it is expected to talk publicly for the first time on Oct. 7 about its technology, which is driving plans for a 609,000-square-foot expansion.

The new facility is expected to catapult Solyndra into the ranks of only a few thin-film solar companies that have commercial-grade production capacity. Solyndra can currently produce enough equipment each year to produce between 75 and 120 megawatts of power. Its proposed plant could boost production to 450 megawatts, which would be the most in the Bay Area. (Read more at the Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal)

Definitely makes me want to learn more about thin film.

And makes me want to learn more about Solyndra.

Yeah totally.  I'm curious what kind of efficiency their cells are getting, and what they'll cost.
