IMO, FREE Gas

in my opinion all these car companies offering free gas with a new car purchase is money wasted on keeping us addicted to gas cars, when they should be using that money to speed up the conversion to non-gas cars.

Well the thing is they're kind of desperate to sell the cars they have that have poor fuel efficiency.  And how do you sell a car with poor fuel efficiency when gas is expensive?  Offer free gas, or gas at a fixed price.

Sales numbers show that the gimmicks aren't working, but it's not as though the auto companies are diverting money they could be using for alternative fuel R&D into these free gas programs.  They're just trying to sell the cars they've already developed.

I certainly agree that it's wasted money keeping people addicted to oil.  The good news is that people are buying more fuel efficient cars.  Just last week I read that Ford is converting one of their plants that currently makes SUVs so that it will now instead make the Focus, which is a fairly efficient car.

wouldn't it be great to think they would take some earnings...use it to develop a way to convert the cars already produced (that run on gas) to switch a few inner workings and viola have a gas free car. instead of scrapping or wasting the whole car. ahhh wishful thinking, but wouldn't it just be amazing to be able to somehow convert all the cars already out there? kind of like how the diesel engines can be converted to run on veggie oil. wish we could do the same for non-diesel engines.
