New categories added!

First off...in case some of you don't know, over at Huddler.com, we now have a company blog.  And in case some of you missed it...we did mention that we would soon be adding new categories to Green Home.

So...drum roll please....

Ta da!  We have new categories!  What's new:

We're still fine tuning everything so you'll have to bare with us...and hopefully soon we'll get apparel for non-babies up too.

Thoughts?

Oh, also, one more thing...we changed around the tabs in your product profiles so they're now no longer Heating/Cooling, Kitchen, Bathroom, etc...

They're now...Body, Home, Kids, Transportation, and Other.

This was our thought process:

  • Body = personal care and food (and clothes when we add them)
  • Home = appliances, light bulbs, clotheslines, cleaning products, etc.
  • Kids = kid stuff (self-explanatory I think)
  • Transportation (also self-explanatory)
  • Other = renewable energy stuff, green media and resources

Of course, you can still change around where stuff appears in your tabs manually...but those are the default locations.

Again...thoughts?

LOVE the new categories.  Didn't realize that "body" included food, but will adopt that from now on!

I think this is very exciting - with the food and beverages, can you add milk?  I guess organic cow's milk might be pretty universal, but there's a wide range of soy, rice, almond, and oat milks...

Thanks!  Milk and milk alternatives are now in (although there are only three products listed at the moment).

can you add to the solor alternatives in home and garden: solar lighting so that people can add products/reviews about path lighting, etc. i'm on the hunt for some outdoor solar lighting to add to a new addition we just did in the garden and saw many reviews on amazon and thought taht would be great for here too.

I love all the new categories as well. I just have a couple of ideas:

1. I would prefer that Food were a separate tab on my profile, for the sheer reason that my BODY list is getting TOO long! ;) So keeping things separately organized would greatly help!

2. When it comes to adding a media resource to my profile the choices are: own it, had it, want it, just like with all products, something that does not really reflect reality. Maybe having choices like: read it, own it, want to read might be more appropriate, since some of us read books from the library and do not own them. And then there is the websites. I can't say I own a site even if I read it every day, right?

3. I would like to see a "condiments" section added to food so I can add my favorite mustard! :)

Anyway, it's really exciting to see the site grow!

Thanks for the feedback!  We'll work on expanding out those categories this week.

I was also thinking, since the books category is getting so long, to organize the books by type to make browsing easier. Basically to have the option to enter what type of book it is and then be able to limit the search by checking the appropriate box on the left. Ideas for types of books: cookbooks, green cleaning, green building etc.

Yeah...we've been thinking about that for quite a while.  Would these types make sense:

  • Cooking and food
  • Environmental science
  • Green living
  • Green building and architecture
  • Kids
  • Other

Let me know what you think and I can get them implemented right away!

These look good. How about Organic Gardening or something to that effect?

Got that one in!  I went ahead and started changing the "type" on the book listings.  I've done about 50 of them so far.  Let me know if you think there are any other types that would make sense!

 Hey! =)

I had this thought this weekend while chatting with my dad.. And, I just found this forum? thread? post? about new categories and such. So my thoughts:

How about a section for Green Events/Activities/Hobbies and/or Eco-Friendly Organizations such as:

Planet Bluegrass events (http://www.bluegrass.com/green/)

Intrepid Travel Carbon Neutral Trips (http://www.intrepidtravel.com/ourtrips/carbon/)

The Asia Foundation (http://asiafoundation.org/program/overview/environment)

Those are a few I've had on my mind recently, but I know there are loads more. Anyway, it could serve as a way for people to participate in community/international events and such and know that it's not adding to the landfills and spreading environmental toxins.

I know this would be a fairly large addition and very possibly requires more thought and structure to it, but I could see how making connections with these organizations could be a huge benefit to huddler in the future. My dad does marketing and promotional work for Planet Bluegrass and personally knows the guy that runs the whole shebang and my cousin in-law is the Director for the Environment Program with the Asia Foundation so there are realistic ties to be made. =) I have no connections with Intrepid except being on their mailing list and wanting REALLY bad to go on one of their trips. haha...

Let me know if I can be of any help. I hate to give you MORE work than you already have ;-) but I thought I had a purdy darn good lightbulb go off is all...

ciao!

That's a great suggestion!  For the moment, we're pretty focused on products but we've certainly thought about huddling around non-profits.  We'll definitely keep thinking about creative ways to get this information out there, but at the moment, I'd probably suggest posting in the forums, perhaps in the Take Action Near You section.
