From allcarselectric - a manner to get an electric car (sort of) for free.

Oklahoma-based, Drive Electric, sells neighborhood electric vehicles (NEVs - a.k.a. electric golf carts) made by Western Golf Cars and Zone Electric. They are offering their 4 passenger version for 6500 USD and after deducting the federal tax credit that would become zero.

Proceed with caution but you can see the whole story at http://www.allcarselectric.com/blog/1040538_get-a-free-electric-car-from-drive-electric

From the Energyboom  & Harry Tournemille - Proving the potential of gas-to-electric conversions, Santa Monica recently welcomed its first converted Ford Ranger from the Gas to Electric shops to the city streets.

Last year the founder of G2E (Gas to Electric) Paul Pearson butted heads with the city for not having a proper license to "manufacture" electric vehicles. But the incident turned out well for Pearson, who ended up with a city contract out of the deal. As a result, last month the first Ford Ranger was delivered to Santa Monica.

The newly electrified Ford Ranger runs approximately 35 miles on a charge and reaches a top speed of 55 mph.

An article in Yahoo News about lithium and the availability of it.

According to this article it is not all that uncommon and can be mined in many places - not just Bolivia.

I'm glad Santa Monica sees to be ahead of the rest of CA. coast accepting EVs.  We only have one charging station in Santa Cruz county but Santa Monica has at least three stations.  Now they can  use them!

I assume that Th!nk is proceeding with Indiana plans to assemble EVs; this is an article I ran across:

Interesting location nearness!

2 Th!nks were at the Detroit show for try-outs.  From Electric Aid site was this info which solved my curiosity:
THINK is joining Indianapolis-based lithium-ion battery maker, EnerDel in choosing Indiana for a North American manufacturing location. Ener1, the parent company of Enerdel, is a 31% equity stakeholder in THINK. In addition to incentives provided by the State of Indiana and Elkhart County, THINK plans to utilize funding from the U.S. Department of Energy ATVM loan program to establish its new production facility.

'Renault to Test 50 EVs Charged From Renewable Energy Sources to Determine Overall CO2 Impact'

'There has been a considerable amount of debate recently about how clean electric vehicles really are.  Some suggest that, dependent upon the source of electricity, electric vehicles may actually be dirtier overall than gasoline vehicles.'

Actually İ have trouble understanding the confusion on this point. İt will always be cleaner to burn fuel to generate power at a central station.

EV's also open the door to charging using PV panels at your home - if you are in a decent location it could be a good deal - outside of the initial project cost. İn another thread İ am starting to point out state incentives you can possibly avail.

İ think that using an outside charging service like 'A Better Place' will turn out to be a big loser. İ can not understand their business model.

How will we recharge all the electric cars?

IN THE ten years since hybrid electric vehicles first hit the highways and byways of America, they have come to represent 2.5% of new car sales. Yet, in places like Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay Area and Washington, DC, every other car seems to be a Toyota Prius. That is because hybrids like the Prius have sold overwhelmingly where well-heeled early adopters reside.

Of course, if not fully charged at night it may have to be recharged during the day—when electricity rates can be up to five times more expensive. Average peak rates in America are 33 cents a kilowatt-hour

To me - points which are to create confusion only!
1. They worry about the 220 volt connection required for faster charging which is no big deal to connect into the household wiring.
2. İf the car is not charged at night time cheap rates it will become expensive - OK so what and who was the genius to figure this out?
3. Range limits of the EV - most families have two cars - the EV is for to work and back plus running around town while the family car has a standard engine if one is worried about range
4. The NYT worries that many areas do not have night rates for power - the utilities are not stupid and they can fix that point

İf we want we can worry about everything and do nothing İ suppose. All in all not terribly impressive articles!

Agreed - none of these points are anything which can't be addressed easily.  Most people will charge their cars overnight anyway, because that's when rates are cheapest and they're not in use.  And there's enough wasted energy during these off-peak hours to charge millions of cars.

I dug deep into this link and found another 3-wheel vehicle which will also be available as an EV:

Quite a collection!

Quote from Jeroen van Agt,  'The newest generation of electric cars is a good match for the current generation of gas and/or diesel powered cars. The development is fast. With newest generation of Lio-Ion batteries and powerful electric motors these cars can be used for daily people and goods transports, have enough range and are faster than their fossil powered brothers. Therefore I have decided to create (and maintain) an overview of these new generation of electric cars.

What an admirable list!  It has taken me about 5 years to dig up info on just a small  few of these vehicles.  Thanks Russ!!
Many of the comments were priceless: "you forgot____ " or "how about________"; then would add even more links!  Larger photos being available and builder info was like "frosting on the cake" for me

From the Green Car Advisor and All Cars Electric - Eric Loveday http://blogs.edmunds.com/greencaradvisor/2010/01/chicago-area-ev-charging-station-is-continental-uss-first-powered-by-wind.html

'Chicago-Area EV Charging Station Is Continental U.S.'s First Powered by Wind

The charging station is powered by electricity generated by wind farms for Highland Park-based law firm Emalfarb Swan & Bain, Carbon Day said in a statement Friday.

"By integrating renewable energy, in this case, the prairie winds of Illinois, to power our office and our cars, we have seamlessly accomplished the goal of a cleaner grid that leads to a reduction of greenhouse gases," said Hal Emalfarb, an Emalfarb partner who drives a Toyota Prius that was converted into a plug-in hybrid.'

My comment İ posted on All Cars Electric
İ wonder what the capacity factor of the local wind farm is? At best 35%?
That means that 65% plus of the time the charge is from the grid - coal or gas fired or nuclear.
Certainly nothing wrong with it but why try to paint something with a green tinge to look like a shamrock?

Expensive at 25 K but looks good.

İ remember things getting exciting with single wheel rear steering - you can change directions rather quickly!
