Cash for Clunkers - Appliance Style

Cash for Clunkers was a success this last year and now the government has decided to play on that green money saving exchange with Cash for Appliances.

Basically the federal gov has allotted $300 million in cash for the appliance program as part of the economic stimulus plan. Unlike Cash for Clunkers, this is not a trade-in deal it's a rebate.

Each individual state will be deciding how to use their part of the loot in their program, but each state is going to allow consumers to upgrade old, less energy efficient appliances to new much more energy efficient Energy Star appliances at nice discounts. Also each state is expected to have rebates good for all kinds of appliances - from refrigerators and dishwashers to furnaces and air conditioners. The estimate is that each rebate will end up being about $50-200 per item.

As in the Cash for Clunkers program there’s only so much money allotted (although that program was extended). You should keep an eye out for your state’s plan to show up in the news so you don’t miss out. Read the DOE press release.

Note, this is on top of rebates already offered by states and Energy Star for appliances. If you do happen to miss Cash for Appliances, you can still easily locate rebates and savings on Energy Star appliances.

I wonder if any landlords would be interested in taking part in that kind of thing.  They don't really see the immediate benefit as their tenants are the ones using the appliances.  But maybe!  (Although I won't hold my breath for my landlord in particular.)
