I came across something really different - the AVE (Atmospheric Vortex Engine).
The concept is to create a tornado, control it by anchoring it to a fixed location with the heat source and create power by utilizing the draft it creates at the bottom (inlets).
Once created the tornado would extend several kilometers into the sky and would probably make changes to the local weather such as rain.

Sounds a bit like a grizzly bear or tiger riding contest to me. The really high power winds will not be tapped for power but the lower velocity drafts at the base would be used.
They claim the tornado will fade away if it breaks loose from the generator. Maybe so but it would probably be best to try it out in a rather remote location.
It certainly is unique!
